At a distance of 35 Kms from Kanyakumari, 53 Kms from Trivandrum & 700 Kms from Chennai (located on Trivandrum – Kanyakumari street), Padmanabhapuram is an historical historic city surrounded by a fort with an space of 187 acres. The traditional capital of Travancore could be constructed earlier than AD 1601. The palace with an space of seven acres, is located within the very centre on the Padmanabhapuram Fort, amidst hills, dales and rivers.
The fort which was constructed with mud initially was dismantled and reconstructed with granite by Maharaja Marthanda Varma. The peak of the partitions varies from 15 ft to 24 ft in line with the inclination of the bottom.
